Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 24th November, 2022

Lund Research Ltd ("we", "us" or "our") is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. Please read our privacy policy carefully and in its entirety.

This privacy policy (together with our terms and conditions https://statistics.laerd.com/tc.php) sets out how Lund Research Ltd uses and protects any information that you give us when you use https://statistics.laerd.com ("Laerd Statistics").

Definitions, such as “Visitor” and “Subscriber”, are defined in our Terms & Conditions. In addition to these definitions, we assume a visitor is not performing actions only a subscriber would be expected to perform (e.g., attempting to login or reset their password).

Inline with our own beliefs and the GDPR, we practice data minimisation, storage limitation and purpose limitation. Simply put, this means that we only collect, process and store the minimum of data we believe is necessary to fulfill our obligations, such as legal, contractual, and so forth, and we store this data for as short a time as possible. We believe you have that right to privacy. We do not collect and store data for vanity metrics or for some purpose we do not know yet, but might be useful in future.

What data we collect is a process we keep reviewing.

These and the other principles of GDPR, on how we collect, process and store personal information, are set out in this Privacy Policy.

Information we collect on visitors

Correspondence

If you contact us, we will collect information, such as your name, email address, and your message. We will only use this information to contact you regarding your message and/or to address any issues you raise in your message. We may also contact you if, in the course of your correspondence with us, we notice from your email address or the content of your message, that you might be eligible to receive free access to Laerd Premium Content.

Analytics

We want to process as little personal information as possible when you use our website. That's why we've chosen Fathom Analytics for our website analytics, which doesn't use cookies and complies with the GDPR, ePrivacy (including PECR), COPPA and CCPA. Using this privacy-friendly website analytics software, your IP address is only briefly processed, and we (running this website) have no way of identifying you. As per the CCPA, your personal information is de-identified. You can read more about this on Fathom Analytics' website.

The purpose of us using this software is to understand our website traffic in the most privacy-friendly way possible so that we can continually improve our website and business. The lawful basis as per the GDPR is "Article 6(1)(f); where our legitimate interests are to improve our website and business continually." As per the explanation, no personal data is stored over time.

Payment location

If you visit the Plans & Pricing or Sign-up pages, we briefly process your IP address to determine your country location (e.g., Norway). We do this for two reasons: (i) to determine which currency to display to a visitor (e.g., display Norwegian Krone to visitors determined via IP address to be viewing the website from Norway); and (ii) to provide a message to visitors who are located in a country for which we cannot take payments (e.g., Saudi Arabia).

In both cases, we neither store your IP address nor the country associated with your IP address.

Information we collect on subscribers

Creating an account

In order to become a subscriber, you first need to create an account. We collect the information you provide us when creating an account, such as your first name, last name and email. The purpose of this processing is to be able to provide you with access to Laerd Premium Content. The legal basis for doing this under GDPR is b) contract.

Payment

We currently allow payments to be made via two different payment providers: Stripe and PayPal. Before payment, we collect your IP address, and process this IP address to obtain your country and state/province. We send this data to these payment processors as metadata for the purpose of determining if, and where, taxes should be paid (e.g., UK VAT). The lawful bases for doing this under GDPR are b) contract, and c) legal obligation relating to accounting, tax and other laws we must abide by.

We keep your account details, payment information, IP address and location data for the period you are a customer and for six years thereafter for accounting purposes under UK law.

Correspondence

If you contact us, we will collect information, such as your name, email address, and your message. We will only use this information to contact you regarding your message and/or to address any issues you raise in your message. We may also contact you if, in the course of your correspondence with us, we notice from your email address or your message, that you might be eligible to receive free membership to Laerd Premium Content.

Analytics

We use Fathom Analytics for the Laerd Premium Content. In addition, we collect, process and store information on your usage of the Laerd Premium Content including, but not limited to, the pages you viewed, your IP address, your location and your user agent. We collect this information to detect and prevent abuse and misuse; that is, a breach of our Terms and Conditions. Breaches we monitor include, but are not limited to, the sharing of an account and the removal of Laerd Premium Content. Our lawful bases to do this are b) contract and f) legitimate interest to prevent abuse and misuse.

Whom we share your personal data with

In order to operate our business efficiently and securely, we use some third-party services. In order to do this, we only share data with them that is required for the services used. These include:

For security reasons we have not listed the names of all providers (e.g., the name of our accountants). Some of the above providers might process and store your personal information outside of the European Economic Area. We share the above information on the lawful basis of b) contract and/or f) legitimate interest.

Marketing Communications

We may contact you from time to time by email about products or services that you request or which we feel may interest you unless you have opted-out of receiving these emails. You can opt-out of receiving these emails at any time by clicking on the opt-out link in the marketing email.

Security

We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect.

Our servers are located in the United Kingdom.

Information Disclosure

We may also disclose your information to: (i) successors in title to our business or assets; (ii) law enforcement authorities requesting or requiring us to comply with our legal obligations; (iii) any parties involved in complying with any legal obligation in accordance with our Terms and Conditions (https://statistics.laerd.com/tc.php).

Subscribers’ subscribers

When a subscriber has not paid for access to Laerd Premium Content, but access has been provided by a third party (e.g., a student has access provided by their university), then personal information we collect on the subscriber can also be made available to the subscriber’s subscriber unless the subscriber’s subscriber wants to opt out of this arrangement.

Cookies we use

A cookie is a small piece of data that your browser receives from websites you visit. It is stored as a file on your hard drive. These cookies can remain on your hard drive for different lengths of time. For example, you can set a cookie to remain available for one month or one year.

A session cookie is a special type of cookie. It only lasts as long as your browser remains open. Once you close your browser, all session cookies are deleted.

We can separate our use of cookies into two categories:

Content not requiring a subscription (Laerd Standard Content)

We do not set any cookies at all with two notable exceptions: (i) we set a session cookie on any page that includes a webform strictly for security purposes (e.g., to prevent cross-site request forgeries, CSRF, on our login page); and (ii) we set a session cookie on our Plans & Pricing page if, and only if, you change the currency you wish to pay in.

We do not store any personal information in these session cookies. This applies to visitors and subscribers alike.

Content requiring a subscription (Laerd Premium Content)

In addition to the above, a single cookie is set that uniquely identifies a subscriber when they visit Laerd Premium Content. This cookie is not set or used when a subscriber simply views Laerd Standard Content, but may be used when a subscriber submits a webform (e.g., login). This cookie is set to expire after one year.

This cookie is used in our analytics system for subscribers. We do not link the viewing of Laerd Standard Content to a subscriber.

Blocking this cookie may prevent, or otherwise adversely affect, a subscriber’s use of Laerd Premium Content.
